Cloth Diaper and EC Babies

Mum’s Bum’s All-in-One Hemp Diaper:

Loved the idea of these diapers but when it came to actually using them I was less impressed than with others. The design looked great as it allows the attached layers to flop out for better cleaning and fast drying time, but they dried with quite a crusty feel to them, and seemed uncomfortable for the baby. The

Velcro aplix that goes across the front of the waistline sometimes turned in at the top when babe was wearing them, meaning that the hook and loops were on occasion rubbing on her belly and irritated the skin a little bit. The legs openings are elasticized but not really gusseted and we often had leakages with them. Just not our luck with this brand and style!

With no snaps or velcro it seems odd at first to try to ‘put on’ these diapers but once a cover is being put in place overtop they stay put and do a great job of absorbtion without the concern of any fasteners poking or binding baby. So far the thicker pile of the fabric does a better job of containing thicker messes and they clean up easily. Can also fit into a number of wraps or covers, and stay surprisingly in place even in looser covers like woolies. The one-size option with a more generic shape means they wear more like a fitted for smaller babies and more like an insert for larger ones. We’ve only be using this for a couple of weeks for a friend who asked us to test it so I don’t have lots of experience to call on yet for results….

AMP Hemp Fitted Diapers:

LOVE these fitteds for overnight. Sturdy snaps and great fitting, one of the few diapers I could use from day 1 with my 5 ¾ lbs daughter. . They come with their own hemp insert and are easily boosted by adding any number of additional inserts or prefolds. The fluid retention is super for longer periods. They need a cover and I have used both Thirsties Duo Covers and a Disana Wool cover with them with much success, they seem to fit well under a variety of different styles.

These diapers have lots of great features: easy snaps with multiple settings, elastic gathering at both the front and the back waistline to keep in messes, and fitted elastic at both leg openings. The microfleece inside is great at wicking, and the pocket itself has the opening at the front, rather than the back, of the diaper which is much easier with poops! J - My favourite aspect of them is their ability to work as both a cover or a pocket diaper. The deep gusset allows you to fold any number of inserts on to the top of the microfleece and then stretch the edges around the ‘hold’ it in place. This allows the diaper to be used over and over again as a cover, only changing the inserts if they aren’t soaked through. Or, I can stuff the inserts right inside the pocket and use them like an all-in-one. I have found them to be versatile and easy to clean. The only down side I’ve had on one occasion was I found that when they were quite full of moisture, the microfleece at the back actually wicked so well that it leaked pee on to the back of my girls’ pants (the microfiber sticks above the elastic, and wicked the moisture right out the edge of the diaper). Great daytime diapers, I have only used them overnight a few times as I have other options. The size small (there are 2 sizes) has been used by my smaller daughter from week 4 to over 3 months and we’re still going (7 – 12lbs so far).

This was the first diaper our daughter used at the hospital and it fit her well as a babe who came 3 weeks early and was under 6 lbs. Really easy to put on and off and to put inserts in and out, not necessarily the best leakage protection at the leg openings which were just single elastic with no extra gussets or . It was nice to be able to have something that fit well at the very beginning but as her ‘output’ increases I would want something with different leg design.

Bottombumpers Onesize Side Snapping All In One Diaper Review

How easy is it to use?
The Bottombumpers Onesize Side Snapping All In One Diaper has a completely new and revolutionary way to change the size of your diaper.  There are four rows of snaps inside the diaper at the rear that adjust the size of your diaper, and it is super easy to figure out, as Bottombumpers has colour coded it for us!!  This diaper also has a two layer soaker that snaps in at the rear (above the adjustment snaps), and because the soaker is not permanently attached to the diaper, means a super quick drying time! (The soaker does not need to be detached, but if you wanted to line dry the cover and dry the soaker in the dryer, that is possible!)
The cover is made with the same durable waterproof soft outer, as their other popular diapers, and is lined with soft organic cotton, which means you do not have to purchase a separate cover or liner for this diaper!  And no stuffing is required!!!
Because this diaper is a Side Snapping Diaper, I found it rather difficult to get the hang of getting it on and fitting right on my baby.  After a little practise, it is not too hard, but I think anyone with a super wriggly baby might have issues to start with!  (This is just my personal opinion.  A lot of people swear by side snapping diapers because they generally give a really good fit to a large number of babies!)

How well does it fit?
The fantastic thing about this diaper, is that it is very trim fitting, and looks much more like a sized diaper than a onesize diaper!!! It also come is 10 great colours (5 bright and 5 pastel), and the ruffle at the back makes it look super cute on your baby!
The sizing should fit babies from 8-25+lbs, however I found that even on the smallest setting all around on my 15lb little girl, that I still did not have a good fit around her legs!
I would think that this diaper would last us, well through to potty training though!

How well does it work?
Even though we did not have a great fit around the legs with my little girl, after extensive daytime testing, I still did not have any leaks to speak of!  I attribute this to the fact that Bottombumpers Soakers are super absorbent!  Each 2 layer soaker is made with 4 layers of Organic Cotton, topped with soft Bamboo Velour.
The only other thing I will mention, is that the elastic around the legs is sewn in such a fashion, that the Organic Cotton liner can poke out.  To ensure there is no wicking, just make sure this is tucked in each time!

How long will it last?
I have been testing this diaper extensively for over a month now (washing almost every day!), and it still looks brand new!! I am not kidding, I could put this diaper in plastic, and put it on the shelf in a store, and no-one would be able to tell the difference!!!  Another good thing about this diaper is that unlike my Bum Genius Elementals, the Organic Cotton still feels super soft.  This diaper will easily last me throughout diapering a couple of children!!!

Is it good value for money?
At C$23.95, this diaper is FANTASTIC value for money!!  Think about this for a moment....  This is a One Size Diaper, so will fit your baby in the first month, right through to potty training and beyond.  It is durable so is able to be used on more than one baby.  It has side snaps which ensures a good fit on a wide range of baby body types.  It has a durable waterproof soft outer, so no separate cover is needed.  It is lined with certified Organic Cotton which also covers the back of the snaps, so no red marks on baby!  The Soaker can be detached from the diaper if you like and is made from 4 layers of Organic Cotton, and topped with silky Bamboo Velour, and to top it off, the diapers are made in the USA.  How can you get better than that?

Overall:
I like my Bottombumpers Onesize Side Snapping All In One Diaper, and think everyone should have at least one of two in their stash!  This diaper is super low maintenance and a great addition to every cloth diaper stash!  There are not a lot of Onesize All In One Diapers out there, but this one is one of my favourites!

Applecheeks--by far my favourite diaper.  I don't have any of their inserts, but I LOVE their covers and am curious to try their inserts.  They fit so well and I think part of this is because they have elastic at the front of the waist, whereas most other covers only have elastic on the legs and at the back of the waist.  The elastic is also really nice--it doesn't leave marks on my baby's skin.  I've never had a leak with these, and they are absolutely the cutest covers.  The snaps are great--they don't get ratty like hook and loop closures can.  They are also Canadian--big bonus!

These fit relatively well for a pocket diaper with the cotton terry insert.  I like the snaps and they come in lots of nice colours.  They also wash and dry well.

Fuzzibunz Perfect fit have converted me! Review of a first time cloth user. I have always used disposable diapers so FuzziBunz is the first reusable diaper I have any experience with. All I can say is I am in love and will never look back! I love the fit, leak protection, comfort and look of the diapers. I was leery of trying cloth just because it was unknown to me, I have four other kids and they have all been in disposable; although I did not like the performance or cost of using them, they were all I knew.
I bought his FuzziBunz diapers from a local merchant and so glad that I did. Now that FuzziBunz has proven how wonderful cloth can be I will never look back and even dad is on board.

Fit
I like that the legs are adjustable to get the protection needed for the messy times. My little one has reflux and wearing restrictive clothing aggravates his reflux so I like that I can leave the waist a little looser and still have the legs tight enough to protect his clothing from blow outs.  Even with the waist looser we have not had any leaks at all, I guess the fluff works wonders! Now I did say all I have used in the past has been disposables so I have to get used to the fact that cloth us bulkier than I am accustom. There is a trade off, a little extra bulk for better performance.

Leak protection
I am pleasantly surprised by the performance of FuzziBunz. I have always fought leaks with diapers and now no more! It was so frustrating to have wet clothing and a disposable diaper that was all but dry. We have been using our FuzziBunz for a week and have not had any leaks, amazing. We geared up for a night of trick-or-treat fun; I put his Fuzzibunz on, put him in his sling and off we went. I have to admit that I was a little nervous that we would be soaked at the end of our evening. I was so happy to see that we were completely dry even though the adventure lasted almost 4 hours without a pit stop. (I usually change my babies more often but we were not near the car and were having so much fun we did not want to leave.)

Sleeping in our FuzziBunz
This is my favorite part! I can't stand waking up with my little co-sleeper and we are both wet, which (although he is not a heavy night-time wetter) has happened way too many time with our disposables. I put Fuzzibunz to the test, double stuff that bad boy and off to bed we went.  I woke up to a smiling baby and a dry bed! Oh the joy of Fuzzibunz! I actually wash less laundry using FuzziBunz than using disposables.

Oh so easy to use
Easy to stuff the pocket diaper and you can double stuff for more protection.
Easy to wash and the diaper shell dries really quickly.
Easy to adjust to custom fit my little guy, no more squeezing the belly to get good fit on thin thighs.
Easy to clean the messy diapers, quick shake and spray and it was ready for the washer.
Easy dry mornings, and no leaks during the day.
Easy on the eye, nothing is cuter than a cloth diapers wearing baby in his diaper shirt!
In short I love this diaper, thank you Fuzzibunz!

This is a guest post from Shelly, Mom of Islah (9months), from Calgary Alberta

My time with G-Diapers:

Hi Parents! Before my daughter was born, I found the most amazing hybrid diapering system, and thought it would be the answer to my need to be kinder to the environment, while allowing me to never have to touch things left best unmentioned. Experienced parents will laugh at that last statement.

I had to wait a while until I started to use them, since I was under the impression that I was having a large baby, so didn’t set myself up with the newborn sizing. Around 2 months, they finally fit her properly, and I started using them with the disposable/flushable inserts.

Functionally, they were great, and being able to tear the side and flush the whole, icky mess down the toilet was a dream. No stinky nursery. I lived in a fifty year old bungalow at the time, and there were a couple of worrisome moments with the old plumbing, but overall, I never was too concerned. This was when my husband confessed that he had been flushing baby wipes as well. Once we got that straightened out, it was much better.

My baby girl was an average wetter, and the disposable inserts held up well against that. I did find the inserts a bit pricey, at around $20.00 for a package of 40. Once I did the math, I supplemented the disposable inserts with Cotton Prefolds that worked great. I later found out that there was actually G Diaper specific inserts, and wish I had gotten to try them out.

What I liked about them, is that often you could reuse the cotton outer pants, while washing just the snap in liners, cutting down on the laundry that a standard cloth diaper would use. They provide you with options, it’s not always convenient to have cloth on the go, and the inserts are not only flushable, but they’re also biodegradable, so if you compost, you can throw them into your composter. Both the outer and the liner dried super fast. They are made of soft, comfy stretchy material, and the elastic was wide and strong, providing a snug fit. I never actually had any blowouts on my baby’s clothes, which was great. Add to the fact that they are super cute, with so many colors and prints to pick from. It was almost like a fashion accessory! They aren’t very bulky, leaving more room in your diaper bag for other stuff, like your husband’s wallet and your 11 year old step- son’s stuff! Not sure if the last bit is a pro or a con…..

What I disliked about them was that personally, I found the disposable inserts a bit too pricey for my budget. I did have to have several training sessions with my husband before we stopped having them on backwards, and near plumbing emergencies. Despite my best intentions, I got my hands dirty, and often. Experienced parents will laugh here again. They aren’t super Grandparent friendly, as you have to go through the whole training session all over again. And I wish that the cloth inserts had been easier to find, since I certainly would have used those instead of Prefolds, so, finding their product was a bit complicated for me.

G diapers are a great alternative to disposables, and if you are interested in them, and want to use them, they work fabulously. Their fit and function didn’t disappoint. Budget conscious parents might want to work out just how much it would cost them, versus a one size cloth system. That being said, using them with the cloth inserts is a way to make them a bit more comparable.
